The Starfish

This is a true story about an author who lives in America. One morning whilst sitting at his computer, he got stuck for ideas and decided to take a walk. As he lived by the coast, he took himself off for a stroll along the sandy beach. The sky was blue and the gentle breeze embraced him as he breathed in the fresh clean air, glad to be outdoors again.

Barefooted in the warm surf, he suddenly noticed hundreds of starfish had been washed up on the shore. Way off in the distance, he noticed a young boy picking up the starfish one by one and throwing them back into the ocean. The man observed him for a few minutes and as he drew nearer, asked what he was doing. The boy replied that he was returning the starfish to the sea, otherwise they would die. The man asked how saving a few, when so many were doomed, would make any difference whatsoever. The boy glanced at him, picked up a starfish and as he threw it back said, “It’s going to make a big difference to this one…..”

The man left the boy and returned home to continue working, only to find he couldn’t concentrate on his novel. Before he knew it, he was making his way down to the beach where he spent the rest of the afternoon helping the boy throw starfish back into the sea.
